A brilliant fantasy novel!
Gripping, intelligent and beautifully written, this is fantasy for adults. The story of a plain slave girl who is more surprised than anyone at the scope of her developing powers, and of an ageless being who is struggling not to become tired of life. With numerous other characters struggling with both physical and emotional handicaps, you'll find the images in STONE MAIDEN will stay with you long after you've finished. Highly recommended; read it now!

Stone Maiden
This was one of the best books I've ever read and I was hoping to find a sequel to it but I guess I will have to wait.
Muir was a slave in her household and unrealising her potential for more til she meets a eefreeti(a older different race) and saves his life even though she knew she would be punished badly for staying so long from the household. She brings him back with her and the town wants to burn her because of supersticious advise about eefreeti's. The efreeti saves her from burning by annilating everyone in the town to dust. She binds her service with him since the only life she knew was servitude and better to be bound than alone. She helps him on his quest to learn how to stop his people from dying out and she learns about her powers along the way while making friends as well and learning that destiny has had her hand on her fate and honesty and dignity that through it all has kept her debts payed even at the end when she must leave the child that she helped create.

Fantasy? More like lucid dreaming...
Read this book. Read it. Then shiver deliciously at the possibility of it...

The Stone of Laughter
Published in Paperback by Consortium Book Sales & Distribution (March, 1995)
Authors: Hoda Barakat and Hudba Barakeat
Average review score:

One of the most powerful war novels i ever read
I'm thrilled to see the 'emerging voices' series on Amazon. Wonderful!.

This book is one of the powerful, poignant books I have ever read about wars (and I've read a great deal). It tackles the deeper issues of violence -- how does the soul feel when confronted with violence, mindless violence, on a daily basis? how do people react? what happens to one's sensitivity? one's ability for honest laughter? one's interactions with others?

Hoda Barakat delves into those issues - and does so courageously and poetically. She also presents them through the eyes of a homosexual man. Quite powerful!.

Highly recommended - to Lebanese, to Arabs, and to all people interested in examining the effects of war and violence on every-day people.

- Rania (a Lebanese-American)

A New Classic
What a brave author, tackling two controversial subjects in one single masterfully-written novel. Did I read it, dream it or live it?

A Beautiful story with feelings
This book takes you away into a whole new world. But on close examination, you realise that it is your world.

Great fun to read in the sun.

Stone Warriors Rule! (Gargoyles, No 1)

Authors: Paul Mantell and Avery Hart
Average review score:

Characters
The book is very interesting. The characters are Xanantos, Demona, Goliath, Hudson, Broadway, Bronx, Brooklyn, Lexington, and Elisa. I'de rate it at 20! You'll love it. Read read read. Get a used copy.

GARGOYLES Defenders of the Night
This is a great book about the hit TV Disney series "Gargoyles". It's not the usual Disney tone which makes it more unique and fascinating. They are defenders of the night waking up in Manhattan after being in stone sleep for a millenium. You definitely should read this book.

Gargoyles' survival
From medievel Scotland to modern-day America a clan of Gargoyles learns a new way of life, one that is completely different from the one they left and hard to comprehend. With the help of their human friend, Eliza Masa, they learn to adapt. The book is faithful to the tv cartoon series, as are the illustrations depicting the Gargoyle clan.

Stone Water

You'll Think About This Long After Putting it Down!
Eighth-grader Grant is a loving child whose affection for his dignified grandfather would never be questioned. In fact, when his grandfather suffers a stroke and is sent to "The Other Wing" of the nursing home, Grant is the only one in the family who makes the time to visit him; his mother and father are both so wrapped up in their careers that they find neglecting both Grant and the grandfather too easy to do. This story becomes complicated from the very beginning when the reader realizes that the letter and recorded story Grant has received from his grandfather is actually a cleverly disguised request for assisted suicide. Throughout the remainder of the novel, we follow Grant's life through months of agony as he tries to make sense of the value of life and the inevitability of death. The secondary characters--Grant's parents, his best friend Avery, and even Randi--become part of the reader's inability to put down this book. You won't know for sure what Grant does until the end of the story, and you will be left questioning what you would do in the same situation.

WOW!
Stone Water is an excellent book dealing with real subjects in todays world. It deals with the hardships of life and death. In our fast paced world we need to stop and think about the quality of life, not the length of it. I loved the book, once I started reading it I couldn't put it down.

Will change your views on assisted suicide
A must read. This book changed the way I view assisted suicide. Through a young child's life we see how one's final wish can shape another's life. A real tear jerker. It empties your emotions and leaves you trapped in the world the book creates for hours, if not days after. As all good books should do.

Stonehenge (Digging for the Past)
Published in Library Binding by Oxford University Press (May, 2002)
Authors: Caroline Malone, Nancy Stone Bernard, and Brian Fagan
Average review score:

Stonehenge (digging for the past) & Valley of the Kings book
I am impressed with the Stonehenge and Valley of the Kings books for a variety of reasons:
-crisp, clear, appealing layout
-inclusion of maps with modern cities and related sites
-timeline, glossary and index
-photos and drawings have clear informational captions
-interesting aspects of the topic are explained on full-page "asides"
-use of words like "probably" and "one theory" to explore how our understanding of these ancient sites changes as archeologists discover more
-the mixture of the historical and legendary with the technical and physical information
-interviews with the archeologists, which personalizes the subject and makes it real and possible for students

Stonehenge Demystified
This is the best book on Stonehenge. The text is concise and extremely well written and documented. The photos of the sites, stones and artifacts are beautiful. I especially liked the anciet time-line.
Ms. Bernard answers the Who, Why and When about the constuction of Stonehenge. Anyone interested in archeolgy and problem-solving will devour this book.
I am looking foward to more Digging in the Past Serries.

Fact is more interesting than fiction
Stonehenge is a comprehensive and intelligible book that delves into the past explaining facts plus the fallacious legends that have always surrounded this archeological phenomena. It helped me further understand what present day discoveries have been made' and how the legends grew up around Stonehenge. The interview at the end of the book with Ms. Malone was educational and informative. The thorough glossary was also very helpful. I would highly recommend this book to any novice or person already interested in archeology.

Stones in His Pockets
Published in Paperback by Applause Books (April, 2001)
Authors: Marie Jones and Mel Gussow
Average review score:

One of the best plays I've ever seen
I first saw this play at the Edinburgh Theatre Festival in Scotland, which was the loftiest goal that its authors and performers had set for it. The world quickly recognized how small they were really thinking to have produced such a masterpiece, and the show had a run on the West End and then came to Broadway.

This is one of the funniest plays I've seen/read since Noises Off. Although it takes some imagination when reading the text, one can easily see how utterly comic and tragic the production is. I love this play because it allows actors to stretch, because it doesn't rely on big sets and fancy costumes to engage the audience, and because it's funny as hell. A good read, and a definite must-see.

Excellent play
This play is genius. It is hysterical, touching and heartbreaking. However, one cannot grasp this from the text. I rated this five stars because the show itself is unbelieveable, and the show is the exact text of the book. Regardless, one must see the show to comprehend the genius inherent here.

Poignantly truthful hilarity
I had the privilege to see this play performed at the Duke of York's Theatre on St. Martin's Lane in London this January. I was rolling in the aisles and laughing so hard that my stomach hurt. Marie Jones' masterful understanding of the rural Irish makes for an incredibly funny and deeply authentic portrayal of two Kerrymen who are hired as extras on a big-shot Hollywood filmset. For a good laugh and a stunning view of real Irish people, read it. Then see it, if at all possible. Excellent.

The Stones of Muncaster Cathedral
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (Juv) (April, 1993)
Author: Robert Westall
Average review score:

Put your back against the wall & get ready for a scary ride!
What a great horror story! No, it's not gross, not bloody, not overtly spooky, and the Terminator does not make an appearance, but Westall's subtle writing and build up of true horror make for a literally hair raising read. I read "Stones..." as an adult, over 30 folks, while between "real" jobs while working at a children's bookstore. I took this with me to lunch and was glad I had my back to the wall, even at that I kept looking over my shoulder... Not for under 12, but a great scare! ...Enjoy and read read read!

Amazing!
If someone were to ask me why I read so much fiction, I'd hand them this book. Although it is short, this book is one of the best I've ever read and re-read. From the eerie but gradually intensifying strange occurences, to the uncovering of the cathedral's secret history, to the jaw-dropping climax, this book ROCKED!

As far as I can remember...
...this was one of the scariest books that I read at the time. I still have the book, and have re-read it only a few years ago. The gargoyle is what scared me the most; anyone who reads this will see why I say this. This is like a combination of "The Shining" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say, read this book. It is very, very short, and one can finish it in one sitting. Don't get too scared though...

Stones of Remembrance
Published in Paperback by Creation House (June, 1998)
Author: Fuchsia T. Pickett
Average review score:

A must read book
This is a fascinating book about Fuchsia Pickett's encounters with God. Most Christians believe that there is a deeper walk than they are experiencing. She not only says it is true, but says how she got there. It will leave you hungering to know more about God.

INSPIRING
It will make your heart cry out for more of god. this bookremindsl us of how caring our heavenly father is, and how much hewants to be a part of our lives. a "must read"!! It will change your life!! you won't be able to put it down!!

Awesome
I went to the Christian book store to get a wedding gift, then I walked the aisles looking at books...I picked up this book and felt the Lord speaking to me, "This book will encourage you." I looked at it briefly and saw that she (the author) had a "glory cloud experience" and I could relate to it! I looked at the price and thought, "What is my husband going to think if I come home with it and say that the Lord told me to buy it?" It sounded lame, although I was so excited, so I looked at another book she wrote that was two dollars cheaper, but the Lord said, "Not this one, the other one." Needless to say, I bought it and my husband was not mad at all. (I did not realize that Amazon books had these spiritual books too!) Let me tell you, this book is so very awesome. She relays her experiences of the Lord visiting her personally and teaching her personally at various times. I believe that this book was meant for me. She wrote how when she had the glory cloud experience that the cloud got darker and heavier...I always wondered why the cloud I saw around me was grey. This is a book that clearly shows that if you turn to the Lord and seek Him, HE will instruct and guide you and come to you. I loaned this book out and now it has been reloaned to the same person. This book I plan to pass further around...it is a book that will excite and change you, I believe. I think it would be an "understatement" to say I highly recommend it. Have a blessed day in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. May the Lord Jesus bless everything you touch.

Stonework: Techniques and Projects
Published in Paperback by Storey Books (October, 1997)
Authors: Charles McRaven and Elizabeth McHale
Average review score:

A great guide book
A guide to the basics of stonework that concentrates on the most common projects: retaining walls, stone fences, foundations and steps, and then adds a bit more for the adventuresome: a fireplace, an arched bridge and a moon gate. A good book for the do-it-yourselfer or to learn what to look for in working with a professional stone mason.

Great for beginners and some experience stone workers
As a beginner I found the book easy to read, understandable, and a great asset for my beginning projects. The only thing I would like added to this book was some colored photos of Mr. McRaven's work. Also the descriptions of types of rocks would have helped if there where colored photos. For example, when I started to gather my stones together for my project I realized Mr McRaven's comments on being OK to mix types of stone is not universal. Mixing stone is an art and requires experience with an eye on color.

Also more photos, in color, of good work verses bad work would help beginners like me visualize what my goal should be. I feel I wasted time doing and undoing my stonework.

However, this is still a book for any stoneworker's library.

Excellent primer for confident home-improvers
Compared to other how-to books in the category, McRaven makes the reader feel very capable of completing the projects without "dumbing down" the material. Let's face it- stonework is somewhat intimidating. By adding some easy jobs like the stone birdbath-fountain, you can build confidence for bigger things. I'm ready for spring!!
